Keeping Wineries Safe from Smoke in the Willamette Valley

an inventor demonstrates their unique product at a winery in the Willamette Valley

In the summer of 2022, I had the extraordinary opportunity to meet Spectra Scientific Founder Ye Feng at a beautiful winery in the Willamette Valley.

Ye is a graduate of the University of Oregon's Executive MBA Program, and used his new entrepreneurial skills to solve a unique problem: the increasing intensity of wildfire season, and the resulting smoke, was impacting the quality of grapes grown at these vineyards.

Commissioned in partnership with The Willamette Week, the university used this video to demonstrate the diverse population of entrepreneurs in the region, and how they're using the skills and connections gained in their executive MBA program to solve complex, systemic problems.

Ye's unique device scans and measures grapes for smoke exposure, allowing winemakers to determine which crops are safe for consumption, and will lead to a quality product.

We had a lovely afternoon chatting not just about entrepreneurship but our families, dreams and love of Oregon.

Ingenuity is nothing without community!
